Following paper focuses on Marinaleda, an Andalusian village led by the charismatic mayor Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo, with the purpose of analyzing whether or not the project Marinaleda is fulfilling his expectations for the village as a ‘socialist utopia’ and its survival. A fieldtrip to the village made it possible to conduct interviews with the residents, and enhanced an understanding of the structure of the village, but more importantly their mayor. Historical events will be treated in the paper for a further understanding of the context in which the village came to be. In addition to this, the paper is based upon a novel called The Village Against The World, by the English journalist and author Dan Hancox. The structure of the village, the incentives of the mayor regarding the realization of the ’socialist utopia’ and possible conflicts will be discussed, from our but also Hancox’s partly opposing point of view. In conclusion, the project partly succeeds its expectations but the survival is uncertain.
