The purpose of this project is to examine the motivation for running a marathon by six marathon runners, and also to find out what kind of health-profits, they achieve after running a marathon. The project is a qualitative research where the empirical data is based on an interview as a focus group with six marathon runners. This interview was done to highlight their perspective on marathon and health. This project is done with a hermeneutically point of view in interpreting the expressions of the participants. We use Kristian Larsen’s interpretation of Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts about “habitus”, “capital”, and “fields”, because Larsen operates with the concepts from a “healthy” point of view. Besides working with Larsen, we have been using Klaus Eskelund’s book, ‘Midt i en surfertid’ [In a surfertime] to understand how running has evolved. The results from the analysis show, that the participants have achieved physical, psychological and social benefits e.g. confidence, energy, and they have become better at coping with stressful situations. Therefore, this project concludes that the health-benefits the participants achieve are useful, and gives them an advantage at work or at their education.
