This project report was based on the question of why there is not a public bank alternative in Denmark, as it is imposed on Danish citizens by law to have a NemKonto in a private bank. This amazed us especially since it is possible for private banks to exclude citizens from having such one. To be able to give a qualified answer to our problem, we have chosen to use both an economic and a political science approach, in terms of usage of theories in both disciplines, as this gives us a broader perspective on the problem. This problem will be answered through a three-part analysis of market failures on the banking market, advantages and disadvantages of public service as well as a demonstration of the ideological currents and management trends. The analysis of market failure and the analysis of public service, leads us to the conclusion that public intervention would improve the market. The analysis of the ideological currents and management trends show that the banking market is path dependent, and that this path dependency is reinforced in the interaction with the ideological currents.
