Student thesis: Bachelor project

The focus of this bachelor’s thesis is on the temporary use of urban spaces. It’s a case study that explores the temporary urban space, Dome of Visions, a geodesic dome that functions as a culture- and event space at Søren Kierkegaards Plads in Copenhagen.
Dome of Visions is the product of architects Kristoffer Tejlgaard and Benny Jepsen. Their vision was to create an open and welcoming, environmentally sustainable structure that could blend in anywhere, combining architecture and culture in a new way. The structure is privately owned and funded by the Swedish building entrepreneur NCC. The cultural content and events of Dome of Visions are curated ‘top down’, but everyone can suggest an event on the Dome’s website and make it happen for free. These circumstances are the center of this thesis’ main subject:
In a spatial context, in which way can Dome of Visions at Søren Kirkegaards Plads be seen as a new type of a temporary urban space?

Theoretically, this thesis uses two main theories by John Pløger and the think tank Hausenberg on temporary spaces, and Lefebvre on Production of Space. Through interviews we have collected emperically material from key people connected to Dome of Visions. Methodically, this thesis is based on case study, qualitative interviews and document analysis. The projects uses a hermeneutical and phenomenological approach to creating knowledge.

The main subject is divided into two themes: Temporality and Spatial Value. Both themes will incorporate relevant theory and empiricism, which will be analysed thru document analysis of interview transcriptions and lastly concluded. In additional, the two themes these will be supported by an empirical analysis of the included actors within the subject. This will further be discussed against each other in the main discussion. After that, a main conclusion on the subject main focus occurs, which will be followed by a perspectivation. This concludes that Dome of Visions based on the possible alternative approach in which both the construction, administration and curation of Dome of Visions is seen thru the cooperation of the actors involved.
