Student thesis: Termpaper

In this assignment we have examined the documentary film genre and a trend called hybrid documentary. This trend within the documentary genre is relatively new, and we have attempted to define what a hybrid documentary is by using theoretical empirical data. The first part of the assignment includes a presentation of theories about what a documentary is, documentary modes, the hybrid documentary, terms about dramatization, performance, staging and reconstruction, and theory about argumentation as well. Based on these theories, we have analyzed the film “The Act of Killing” by Joshua Oppenheimer which is categorized as a hybrid documentary. This film is about the genocide in Indonesia in 1965 when the government was overthrown and the murder of 1 million communists occurred. The executioners came from paramilitary groups, they were never punished, and today they are honored by many Indonesians. The main purpose of analysing “The Act of Killing” was to determine in which form the film is a hybrid documentary. We have examined the arguments in the film, in order to understand Oppenheimer’s intention of the documentary. Based on our analysis we came to the conclusion that “The Act of Killing” is a hybrid documentary because it has a mixture of different modes, facts and fiction. Furthermore we concluded that the film mainly claims two things; that the executioner named Anwar Congo is going through a process of realisation, and that the society is corrupt. “The Act of Killing” is an untraditional and interesting documentary, which requires attention to understand, but the film allows us to gain an insight into the executioners way of thinking, and it shows different sides of the indonesian society.
