Abstract

Abstract In this project I have chosen to write about children living on the streets of Kolkata, located in Eastern India. I therefore visited Kolkata for 24 days following the work of a Danish organization by the name of ‘LittleBigHelp’, who run a Day Protection Center (DPC) for homeless children. In this project, I have sought to understand the dynamics of homeless children, and which circumstances relate to their lives as children of the streets. Additionally, I am interested in learning more information about LittleBigHelp, to ascertain whether they are able to change these children's life situations, and the challenges that are involved in working with them. I have chosen to use the “Observational Method” and the ”Activity Theory” -‐ based on the correlation between these. I have observed that children land on the streets for various reasons, but mainly it is due to poverty and domestic violence. In addition, children also face a stigma attached to social hierarchies, which often leads to them trying to isolate themselves from certain environments. In many ways, LittleBigHelp fails to identify the needs of homeless children through their DPC, as the physical framework is not good. However, LittleBigHelps plans for an optimistic outlook for the children, where a brighter future is an option.
