Working life on Nordic Labour Platforms

Abstract

Digital labour platforms are becoming increasingly common. However, the impact of these platforms remains disputed, and there has been little research on how workers experience labour on the platforms, especially in the Nordic countries. This chapter will introduce, illustrate and examine the controversies surrounding the development trajectory of Nordic labour platforms. The rationale for this chapter is that a research engagement with labour platforms on the comparatively well-functioning Nordic labour markets can illuminate both the working life problems of, and the institutional resources that influence, these platforms. The chapter will explore the Nordic labour platforms through the following questions: How can the emerging business models be conceptualized? How do workers experience their involvement in the developing platforms in the Nordic countries? Do the developing labour platforms threaten to create precarious working lives in the Nordic labour markets? Or do the Nordic welfare regimes provide resources to create a sustainable development trajectory of Nordic labour platforms?
