    Abstract

Everyday life habits are an important perspective in health promotion. The article is about changing processes. A theoretical concept about habits is created on the basis of phenomenological and Marxist inspired theories about everyday life. This conceptualization of habits is used in analyzing a case from ethnographic fieldwork in relation to a lifestyle intervention.
The point of the article is that a theoretical conceptualization of habits can be fruitful in an understanding of the complexity and the ambivalence in processes of change. Habits which seem to be unhealthy can contain subjective meaning for the individual. Such a way of thinking has potentials to minimize frustration among professionals and individuals who have the intention to change habits in everyday life.
