The Struggle for Recognition in Times of Deep Mediatization

Research output: Book/ReportPh.D. thesis

Abstract

The dissertation examines the role that media and technology in a broad sense play in processes of social recognition and disrespect in the light of the so-called mediatization of many social domains and societies. The dissertation thus connects social-philosophical discussions of social change and freedom from the recognition literature with the mediatization literature's descriptions of digitalization and datafication as well as related media developments. Based on this theoretical interconnection and especially social philosopher Axel Honneth's different models of freedom, the dissertation builds a tentative analytical tool to discuss both the experiences and practices of media users as well as normative ideas about the positive and negative influence of mediatization on today’s society, which is expressed in for instance legislation, ideas about media literacy as well as idealistic proposals to change the current media environment. This is investigated, among other things, in a small digital-ethnographic case study of four young Danish media users between the ages of 15 and 30.
