The modernisation of the apprenticeship system in Denmark 1945-2015

Abstract

The chapter examines the development of the Danish system of vocational education and training in three periods from 1945 until 2015. In the first period until 1970, the main challenges were to expand the capacity of the VET system in order to absorb the large youth cohorts and to adapt VET to new requirements of industry. During the next period until 1990, the main challenges were to raise the esteem of VET and to reduce social inequality in education by building bridges between vocational and general education. In the third period until 2015, the political challenge was to include disadvantaged youth in VET
