Abstract

This article investigates the appearance of robots on stage in contemporary performance. As a convincingdemonstration of the relevance of robots – as artefact, concept and metaphor – we take Blanca Li’s 2013 danceperformanceRobot !as our starting point. We have distilled five dimensions that provide vocabulary andterminology to characterise different instances of robots on stage with a focus on their expressive character.These dimensions are: Movements, Apparent level of Autonomy & Interaction, Appearance, Massification andSound
