Post-Conflict Recovery Challenges: Affect and Heritage in Post-conflict Cyprus and Italy

This chapter discusses the challenges faced in the recovery of heritage destroyed during conflict as well as the processes involved in restoring conflict heritage that remains unacknowledged and left to ruin. The chapter will review challenges and opportunities provided in the post-conflict period and will address the temporal aspects of such recovery, in the immediate aftermath of conflict, as well as in processes that unfold in the longer term. The focus of this discussion is the relationship between the legal and societal levels on which recovery and reconstruction processes develop. The affective structures that guide these processes are explored in two case studies in Cyprus and Italy and analysed against formal processes of post-conflict heritage management in Iraq, the Balkans, and Spain.
