Abstract
This report examines the importance of nursing and care for the quality of life of residents in sheltered housing or assisted living facilities.
The study shows that care interventions have a positive effect on the quality of life of the residents. This is true in particular with regard to meeting the residents' basic needs, such as personal hygiene, security, accommodation, and food and drink. However, with regard to the more intangible needs, such as social contact, activity and having control of normal everyday life, a relatively large proportion of residents have unmet needs. The study also shows that care-related quality of life is dependent to a great extent on the individual's health and ability to function, as well as the number of visits he or she receives.
The study is based on the ASCOT method, which has not previously been applied in Denmark. This method makes it possible to calculate a total quantitative measure for the quality of life of residents which relates to the nursing and care they receive in the sheltered housing or assisted living facility. A measure is calculated for both the current care-related quality of life with care and nursing, the expected care-related quality of life without care and nursing, as well as for the potential to improve interventions, so that all needs are satisfied.
The report has been commissioned and financed by Kommissionen om livskvalitet og selvbestemmelse i plejebolig og plejehjem (the commission on quality of life and self-determination in sheltered housing/assisted living facilities and nursing homes).
