Abstract

The video refers to a research study about machinima and other types of online media production practices (2010-13). The video is presented on Audiovisual Thinking issue 7 under the theme: The creative economy. The research study involved cases of new online multimedia practices, such as 'machinima' which refers to machine, cinema and anime. Machinima is a multimedia technique and genre used by amateurs and professionals, based on recording motion directly from a screen, for instance, animation of avatars (online characters). Machinima recordings can be integrated into multimedia projects. The media practice and technique is an example of how online activities can be documented and how media contents can be reused in creative media production practices.
The three themes from the research are linguistic resources, visual narratives, and copyright. Issues regarding copyright are highlighted, including challenges regarding remix and ownership of media content due to the reuse of digital media content online.
Three experimental and mainly Scandinavian film and multimedia projects are shown briefly: My Avatar and Me (2010), Gzim Rewind (2012), and Granny Dancing on the Table (in progress). The research study on machinima was part of the Danish Virtual Worlds research project and the Nordic Virtual Worlds Network on entrepreneurship and new online media practices.
