Abstract
Sartre's critique of Mauriac's La fin de la nuit has frequently been commented upon. Later linguistic theories make it possible to prove Sartre to be wrong in his analysis of the tens: passé simple. A series of other linguistic observations make it plausible to argue that Mauriac has a dialogic relation to his protagonist and so approached Bakhtin's ideal of the dialogic author
