OtherThis event examines how the commons, resources collectively managed and shared, can foster social and environmental sustainability. It highlights practices of commoning that challenge power structures, promote inclusion, and reimagine social relations, emphasizing collaboration, care, and shared responsibility. Critical perspectives will also be explored, questioning boundaries of participation and highlighting marginalized practices. Participants are invited to reflect on experiences from workplaces, volunteer initiatives, housing projects, research, and education, considering questions such as:

What can be a common in capitalist, neoliberal, postcolonial societies?
How do we build commons that resist inequalities and entrenched norms?
What collective care practices ensure sustainability and justice?

Through a panel debate, participants will reflect on one guiding question: how they think, experience and create the commons in their practice, be it as academics, writers, activists, and other identities of relevance. The session begins with a ten-minute literary reading by author Shekufe Heiberg (RUC), followed by a discussion facilitated by Marta Padovan-Özdemir (RUC; DK), with contributions from Daniela Lazoroska (LU) and Jo Krøjer (RUC, DK), Laura Horn (RUC), Nathalie Bergame (Chalmers), and Linda Lapina (RUC, DK). We conclude the event with an open audience exchange.

This event creates space to challenge conventional approaches to sustainability, affirm alternative practices, and explore collective care and collaboration through the lens of the commons
