Abstract

The contribution of this article in relation to the ambition of critically exploring participatory processes of co-creation is to analyze how what we name DIY urban design might contribute to citizens’ possibility of participation in and production of space. We will both explore the possibilities of new experimentations with participatory process in urban design and the limits of staged participation.
Through case-studies of the relocation of beer drinkers in Enghave Square in Copenhagen, the participatory and cultural urban planning initiatives in Køge municipality and examples of anonymous unauthorized design interventions in public space, we will discuss and reflect upon the conflicts, potentials and possible alliances of tactical DIY-urbanism both when it takes the form of anonymous tactic place appropriations and when it is integrated strategically in urban planning
