Abstract

The development of spatial concepts and metaphors during and immediately before the Nazi acquisition of power in Germany form an awkward antecendent of the recent 'spatial turn' of theoretical attention in the humanities. This article explores six of the period's influential spatial discourses in search of their respective 'paratopia', a term signifying both a spatial project negating existing social and cultural space (topology), the active efforts to 'inscribe' that negation in the negated space (topography), and finally, the resulting 'inscription' of the negation in the shape of a broken space (kakotope).
