Abstract
Challenging the Conventional gaze in Migration Studies: Reflections on Multiple & Unconventional Positionality ORGANIZERS:Kyoko Shinozaki (Department of Sociology and Cultural Science, University of Salzburg)= Sayaka Osanami Törngren (Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare, Malmö University)PARTICIPANTS:Mante Vertelyte (Aalborg University)Rasmi Singla (Roskilde University)(workshop on methodological challenges and opportunities;open and innovative, and how to have a fruitful conversation)We are aiming for an interactive round table discussion, and we would like you to prepare a short (5-10min) comment addressing one of the following questions.•What happens when a researcher belonging to a structurally disadvantaged group (e.g. non-white, other minority groups or intersection of different disadvantages) conducts social research on groups with advantages (e.g. white people or dominant groups)?•What happens when a researcher who shares “disadvantages” to a certain extent with the researched (e.g. being a migrant) but have significantly different access to “power” (e.g. class differences)?•Is there power and interference embedded in the practice of existing in one territory/nation, while studying another territory/nation?•What kind of new perspectives would research offer if it reverses the analytical direction of East to West or South to North?•What analytical categories could adequately capture these experiences and reflections?•What are the implications and impacts of the ‘reversed’ gaze? What effect does this have on power relations and knowledge production?
