Abstract

Capoeira is a martial art originating in Brazil. It gained fame around the world in the second half of the 20th Century. Capoeira is characterized by its dance-like aesthetic and its particular musicality. Lately, Capoeira has been connected to the Brazilian slavery abolition for its use by black slaves during the struggles against the enslavers at the end of the 19th Century. Capoeira historians debate this point. The question is: was Capoeira used to abolish the Brazilian slavery and, if so, to what extent?
