Abstract
This chapter presents a sociological analysis of the struggle to get the needs of older and disabled people in Norway recognized by the public. Applying Honneth’s theory of recognition, we identify three historical phases of invisibility developed through various violations of care rights and public responsibility for care, the social value of care work, and the character of the work. The chapter contributes to the discussion about care work and recognition in a welfare state over time and in change
