The research addresses the entangled issues of illicit cross-border trade, security, and corruption in the Somali-Kenyan borderlands. The project will investigate the developments in trading routes, trading relations (formal and informal) between businessmen, armed groups, and politicians, and the implications for political developments and state-building in the border region. Not only does the illicit trade in sugar draw links to political developments in Kenya, it also has implications for security dynamics in the region and is related to other types of illegal trade and transportation of other illicit goods.
