Personal profile

My research is on the economics and the political economy of industrial policy. Industrial policy is back on the agenda of both international organisations and developing country governments. The success stories of industrial policy have been experiences of export-oriented industrialisation, mainly in East Asia. However, the scope for export-led structural transformation seems to be shrinking. Consequently, my research wants to revisit the role of domestic market formation in late industrialisation, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. It wants to explore which role domestic-market-oriented industrial policy can play. To do this, my PhD research will comprise an analysis of recent industrial policy attempts in Nigeria. Nigeria is a suitable case study country: Its large population makes for large domestic demand potential and the Nigerian government has actually implemented domestic-market-oriented industrial policy.

Prior to my PhD at Roskilde University, I have worked for GIZ in Nigeria and Botswana on private sector development and technical & vocational education and training. I am interested in contributing to better coordination between development implementation practice and current academic research.
