Personal profile

Research

My research interests are within the ecology and physiology of arthropods, especially flies and spiders.
I mainly work with aspects of food preferences and the width and composition of predator diets. I use biochemical methods, e.g.
different detoxification enzyme systems (P450, transferases and
peroxidases) to detect predator responses to differences in food quality.
The same methods are used to measure stress reactions to e.g.
starvation and exposure to toxic compounds. The studies are supported
by respiratory and calorimetric measurements.
Another main interest is the ecology, taxonomy and faunistics of flies,
especially biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae: Culicoides
Latr.). Especially their role as vectors of arbovirus and general ecological aspects such as flight activity, specific feeding rate and diapause related to climatic conditions are studied
in the field.
