Personal profile

Research

I am currently Associate Professor in Medieval History (formerly Professor MSO 2013-2021). My research interests within this period are broad, ranging from social and cultural history to intellectual history, more specifically, the histories of legal and political thought, history of learning and education, and Church history/history of religion. Alongside this I am interested in what drives long-term historical change across the usual periodization schemes, as well as historical methodologies and (meta)historical theories more generally. A fair number of my recent publications concern historiography, more precisely, how history was conceived, written and used in the past.

At the moment I am writing a historical biography of Archbishop Eskil of Lund (c. 1100-1182) – one of the most significant historical figures of high-medieval northern Europe with support from a Semper Ardens monograph grant from the Carlsberg Foundation.

I have a large, global intellectual research network and am a frequent participant and presenter at international conferences. I am a peer-reviewer/co-editor for several scholarly journals within my field as well as for a number of international research foundations.

Academic memberships/external committees:

I am elected member of the following academic societies and commissions:

CIHU/ICHU (Commission Internationale pour l’Histoire des Universités), as the representative for Denmark

Dansk Selskab for Kulturhistorie (Danish Soiety for Cultural History) (as vice-chairman)

Dansk Sprog og Litteraturselskab

Societas Latina Daniae (member of the board)

Dansk Selskab for Oldtids- og Middelalderforskning (Danish Society for Ancient and Medieval Research)

Teaching

I teach and supervise students at undergraduate and graduate levels both within my field, history (also covering other periods, though predominantly pre-1750 history) as well as more broadly within a very wide range of subjects touching on the humanities and contemporary culture more generally (typically at BA level). I also teach historical methodology and historical writing/historiography
