Research

RESEARCH AREA: MARINE ECOLOGY, POPULATION ECOLOGY:

• Growth and productivity studies in marine plants - seagrasses, and macroalgae. With special empghasis on whole system estimates and the productivity of Seagrass meadows and Kelp forests.
• Comparative analysis of growth and nutrient dynamics among marine plants and algae with contrasting growth strategy.
• Modelling of meta-population dynamics in seagrasses - development of stage-based matrix models and IBM-models to be able to evaluate effects of environmental stressors at the population level.
• Invasion Biology - aspects of colonization, population dynamics and nutrient physiology of the invasive seaweed, Sargassum muticum, in Limfjorden (Denmark) including the impact on indigenous communities.
• The role of marine plants and algae for the turnover and retention of nutrients in estuarine ecosystems with special focus on the fate of plant-bound nutrients.

• 1990: Scientific assistant, Botanical Institute, Aarhus University, Denmark (3 months).

Major areas of Research: 

My major area of research is comparative studies of ecophysiology and population dynamics in marine macroalgae and seagrasses with a special emphasis on stress biology, i.e. the effects and governing role of sub- or super-optimal levels of nutrients, light, temperature and salinity. I do also study herbivore-plant and predator-prey interactions, invasion biology (especially the reasons for invasions and the impact of invaders on recipient systems) and Kelp Forest Ecology (including algal diversity, primary production, regime shifts and alternate stable states at the ecosystem level, i.e. barrens versus kelp forests).

• Head of Studies for Environmental Biology at RU from 2004 to February 2014.

• WP lead for a WP (of 5) involving 10 scientists in the international project EULIT, funded by EU’s MAST III program 1997-2000.
• WP lead for a WP on primary production in the project ‘Primary and Secondary Production in Kelp Forests’ funded by the Norwegian Research Council 2003-2007.
• WP-lead for WP1 on quantifying the production and fate of kelp detritus in the project ‘Kelp export as fuel for adjacent communities in changing arctic ecosystems’ funded by the Norwegian Research Council 2016-2018.

International relations and current cooperation

I have spent several longer periods abroad on research visits and field studies (e.g. 6 months at UWA in Australia, with Professor D. Walker; 4 months at CSIC in Spain, with Professor C. M. Duarte and several months of field work in Norway with Professor Stein Fredriksen, Oslo University). I have a strong international network build up upon exchange visits and scientific cooperation, which is also reflected by the large amount of international co-authors on my papers.

Teaching experience and supervision of students

I have 27 years of teaching experience at all university levels (Bachelor, Masters and PhD) including course teaching and supervision of project groups. Course subjects: Botany, General Ecology, Population Biology, Community Ecology, Coastal Ecology, Applied Ecology, Plant Physiology, Statistics & Experimental Design, Modeling & System Analysis. I have supervised 41 Master thesis students and 3 PhD students plus co-supervised 2 international guest PhD’s (staying at RU for at least 6 months) from 1996 to present. I have served as an external opponent at 8 PhD defenses at 5 universities (University of Copenhagen; University of Aarhus; University of Southern Denmark; Oslo University Norway and University of Otago New Zealand).
