Research

I am an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Data Science at Roskilde University. My research interests focus on using genetic, bioinformatic, and epidemiological tools to better understand neurological and psychiatric disease.

Both environmental and genetic factors contribute to an individual's characteristics in different ways. I would like to know if the genetic factors are deterministic, and if we can use those genetic factors to make predictions of disease risk. To answer this, I rely on publicly available genetic data from national biobanks like the UK Biobank, FinnGen and the Danish psychiatric research collaboration, iPSYCH. When paired with information from electronic healthcare registers, these biobanks can tell us a lot about genetic and epidemiological factors that shape disease risk in a population. 

I am currently leading the largest genetic analysis on early onset depression across five Nordic countries, supported by the US National Institutes of Health R01 MH123724 (PI Pat Sullivan).

Some of my recent research projects include: genome-wide association of psychiatric and neurobiology disorders, creation of polygenic risk scores (PRS) to estimate disease risk, and comorbidity of psychiatric disorders with infections and epilepsy. This research, supported by the iPSYCH initiative, is a leading national research project that combines over 140,000 genotyped individuals and a national healthcare based register system to address biomedical related questions in Denmark.

I was previously a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill supported by a competitive NIH T32 fellowship through the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disorders. For two years, I investigated the underlying genetic architecture of epilepsy in a mouse research panel. I identified genetic risk factors for epilepsy using the available CC DNA sequencing and additional RNA sequencing resources.
