Personal profile

I am an ethnographer of academic cultures and practices, and an educational researcher. I have recently moved into academic development and university pedagogy.

As an ethnographer of academic cultures and practices, I explore how researchers in the social sciences and humanities construct and undertake their work. Through the notion of boundary work I have explored how researchers maintain, negotiate and disrupt the boundaries of scientificity in everyday interactions. I have investigated the effects of neoliberal policy reforms and new public management practices on university researchers' work, identities and work experiences. In this body of work I sometimes use the genre of creative non-fiction, as a way to question and call attention to the production of academic/scientific knowledge.

As an educational researcher, I have explored the role and implications of psy- disciplinary knowledges in educational fields. I have also researched doctoral education, the changes to doctoral education under neoliberal reform, and the subjectification of doctoral students and the implications hereof for the pedagogical encounter between student and supervisor(s).

More recently, I have started to research collaborative and inquiry-based learning in university education and academic development, including compulsory teacher training. In relation to this, I am the director of the Roskilde University research centre for problem-oriented project-based learning, RUC-PPL.

After many years teaching in sociology, educational psychology, philosophy of science, and research methodology, my teaching is now primarily within university pedagogy, including doctoral supervision, but I am also involved in supervision of Masters projects within educational studies.
