Dominique Routhier

Assistant Professor, Department of Communication and Arts

Dominique Routhier is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research bridges philosophy, art history, and cultural analysis. 

Research and Publications

Dominique Routhier is the author of With and Against (Verso, 2023), which examines the Situationist International's relationship to cybernetics and automation. A LithubMost Anticipated Book of 2023,” the work has received widespread recognition with multiple mentions across international media. The book has been reviewed in academic journals, including the Nordic Journal of Aesthetics, Critical Sociology, and RP Dimanche (in French), as well as in publications like e-flux, Morning Star, Metropolis M (in Dutch), Splinter Magazine, Information (in Danish), 3:AM Magazine, and the Los Angeles Review of Books, among other places.

He has co-edited Aesthetics of Machine Vision: Critical Terms and Ideas (MIT Press, forthcoming) and published in journals such as Nordic Journal of Aesthetics, Rethinking Marxism, Historical Materialism, and others. Writings have appeared in New Left Review - Sidecar, Los Angeles Review of Books, boundary 2 online, and the Verso Blog, alongside regular bylines in Danish and Scandinavian media like Ny Tid, Information, and Politiken.

With Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen (University of Copenhagen), Dominique co-edits a Danish book series on art and politics for Antipyrine. The series features translated works by Rosa Luxemburg, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Claire Fontaine, T.J. Clark, and other significant theorists, past and contemporary.

With Tobias Dias (Aarhus University) and Louis Hartnoll (University of Amsterdam), he is presently working on a special issue of the Nordic Journal of Aesthetics on 'Marxist Aesthetics.'

Current Research

Routhier's current work focuses on the history of vandalism.

Institutional Roles

Routhier is a founding member of the Danish Society for Marxist Studies and has co-organized several international conferences leading up to its tenth anniversary in 2025.

Previous roles include affiliate membership of the Danish Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) from 2022-2024 and of the Center for Culture and Technology at the University of Southern Denmark.

Teaching

Teaching and Supervision

Routhier teaches across BA, MA, and PhD levels, offering courses in cultural history, philosophy, and aesthetics. His supervision interests span contemporary critical theory, cultural history, and political philosophy. Recent supervision projects have explored the Marxist Feminist campaign Wages for Housework in relation to contemporary debates about 'mental load'; the concept and history of neoliberalism in Danish politics; Museum exhibition making and nationalism; Repatriation and decolonization; and, currently, a project on Trumpism and late fascism, among other projects.
