Dr Angela Bourne is Professor MSO at the Institute for Social Science and Business at Roskilde University. Research and teaching expertise falls within the fields of comparative European politics and European Union studies. She has a BA (Hons) from Queensland University, an MA from Lancaster University, and a PhD from University of Bristol and has previously worked at the University of Dundee and the University of Aberystwyth in the United Kingdom. Her main research project at present focuses on opposition to populist parties in Europe, which explores the contemporary relevance of ‘militant democracy’. More specifically, the project examines the effectiveness of different types of opposition to populist parties, including opposition by public authorities, political parties and civil society actors within states and translational and supranational initiatives opposing both governing and opposition populist parties. The research is part of an international, interdisciplinary research project co-lead by Dr Bourne and funded by Carlsberg Foundation ‘Challenges for Europe’ programme. Current research builds on earlier publications examining the conditions under which liberal democratic states undertake the grave decision to ban political parties and Europeanization of social movement mobilisation in the context of the European sovereign debt crisis. Dr. Bourne has published two monographs, Democratic Dilemmas: Why Democracies Ban Political Parties (Routledge, 2018) and The European Union and the Accommodation of Basque Difference in Spain (Manchester UP, 2008), three edited books, and journal articles in high-ranking, peer review articles including European Journal of Political Research, Journal of Common Market Studies, Democratization, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Terrorism and Political Violence, Comparative European Politics, European Constitutional Law Review and Journal of Civil Society. Other research interests include multilevel governance in Europe, Europeanization of social movements, minority nationalist politics in Spain, responses to terrorism. She teaches courses on Globalization and Populism; Approaches to Populism; EU Institutions and Governance; War, Peace and Security, among others.
