Thomas P. Boje, born in 1944. MA in Sociology from Copenhagen University, Denmark, 1972 and Ph. D in Business Administration from Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, 1987.
He has worked at Roskilde University since 1972. First, as Associate Professor and from 1988 as Reader in social sciences.
Full Professor of sociology and labour market studies at Umeå University, Sweden 1995 - 2001.
From 2001 - Thomas P. Boje has been full professor in social science (welfare state and labour market) at Department of Social Sciences, Roskilde University, Denmark
Thomas P. Boje was head of Department for Department of Social Sciences, Roskilde University 1988 - 1990. In the period 1996 - 1998 he has been member of the Swedish Council of Research in Social Sciences and Humanities (HSFR) and in the years 1999 - 2001 he was member of the Swedish Council of Social Research (SFR). In 2002-03 he has been member of the international committee appointed by the Swedish ‘Högskoleverket' to evaluate the Swedish education in Sociology. From 2007 Thomas P. Boje has been appointed External Examiner in sociology at National University of Ireland in Maynooth and member of the International Advisory Board of the REMESO Centre at Linköping University, Sweden (Centre of Excellence for Research on Migration, Economy, and Society).
Thomas P. Boje is regularly referee for Nordisk Kulturfond, Acta Sociologica, Citizenship Studies, European Societies, and Riksbankens Jubilæumsfond, Norges Forskningsråd.
Thomas P. Boje held an "American Studies Fellowship" at Department of Sociology, Harvard University, Cambridge, USA in the academic year 1988-89 and a "Jean Monnet Fellowship" at Department of Political Science and Sociology at the European University Institute, Florence, Italy in 1992 - 93. In 1995 he was guest professor in European Forum at the European University Institute for one term.
During the recent years Thomas P. Boje has been guest professor at Karl-Franzen University, Department of Sociology, Graz, Austria, 2000, at Linköping University, Campus Norrköping, Theme ‘Culture and Work' 2003, and most recently at London School of Economics and Political Science, Centre for Civil Society, Department of Social Policy one term in 2006 followed by shorter stay in the years 2007 to 2012
Thomas P. Boje is working on several research themes; Citizenhsip, Participation and Civil Society; The Socio-Economic Impact of Civil Society in Denmark; Volunteering and Social Capital; Work-Family Relations and Welfare Regimes.
Thomas P. Boje has been head of several major research projects during the recent decade. Several of them have been comparative projects. He was the Swedish team leader for two TSER-EU projects: 1) Between Integration and Exclusion: A Comparative Study in Local Dynamics of Precarity and Resistance in Urban Contexts' 1998 - 2000 chaired by Daniel Bertaux, CNRS and EHESS, Paris, France, 2) ‘Households, Work and Flexibility' 2001 - 2003 chaired by Claire Wallace, HIS, Vienna, Austria (www.HWF.at ) Finally, Boje is the Danish team leader of the EU FP6 project ‘WORKCARE' 2006-2009 chaired by prof. Claire Wallace, University of Aberdeen (www.abdn.ac.uk/socsci/research/nec/workcare). These networks have been followed up by an EU-FP-7 programme on coordinated action Work-Care-Synergies (WCS) chair by Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna (HIS) 2010-2012 (www.workcaresynergies.eu). Here I work closely together with Anders Ejrnæs, Roskilde University.
Thomas P. Boje was the international coordinator of the EU FP6 Network of Excellence ‘Civil Society and New Forms of Governance in Europe - the making of European Citizenship' including 42 European research institutions and universities from 15 EU Member States. The CINEFOGO project was financed by an EU-grant of 3.9 mill. Euro and run in the period 2005-2009. See http://www.cinefogo.org/
Thomas P. Boje is part of a Danish consortium, which has carried out the Danish research for the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project during the period 2004-07. The population survey on volunteering in Denmark will repeated in Fall 2012 See http://www.frivillighedsus.dk/. He is for the time being head of the research programme “The socio-economic impact of the organised civil society and volunteering in Denmark anno 2014” financed by the Realdania Foundation for 2013 – 2016.
During the most recent years Thomas P. Boje has been involved in research cooperation with Chinese social scientists on the topic “Social Policy Challenges in China – migration, family and demographic changes; demands for care services”. Especially the impact of internal migration on the family structure has been in focus for the research jointly undertaken with scholars from Peking University, China Academy of Social Sciences, and East China University of Technology and Science in Shanghai
Thomas P. Boje has been co-editor for Acta Sociologica in 1988 - 90 and again in 2004 - 2006 and Editor in Chief for the journal "European Societies" (1999 - 2001). He is presently co-editor for Dansk Sociologi (1993-2011) Thomas P. Boje is one of the founders of the European Sociological Association and has been a member of the executive committee for the European Sociological Association in the period 1992 - 1999 where he had the positions of Treasurer and Chair of the Publication Committee (1997-1999). He has again been elected member of the Executive Board of the European Sociological Association 2007-2011.
