Personal profile
Research
My primary research interest revolves around governance-related topics, with a focus on the coordination and organization of functionally differentiated societal processes. This includes examining how various societal functions are managed and harmonized to ensure effective governance.
Currently, my work centers on how collaborative governance (and cognate concepts) can be leveraged to address climate and sustainability challenges at the local level. I am particularly interested in how collaborative networks are structured and governed, especially regarding the dimensions of control and power. In this context, I am involved in the GOGREEN research project, which aims to identify the governance factors that are necessary and sufficient for the successful co-creation of green solutions to local climate and sustainability challenges. Within this broader research framework, my focus has been on the application of collaborative governance in specific areas such as circular economies, mangrove conservation and restoration, renewable energy politics, nature parks, and the co-design of sustainable housing. These domains have been particularly relevant for exploring how collaborative approaches can help address complex challenges and promote sustainable practices.
Expanding on my research on co-created transitions, I am also engaged in several research collaborations. These include examining the relative success of energy governance in Europe and the Western Balkans, investigating how firms navigate public-sector-led circular ecosystems, and analyzing the impacts of large-scale cross-sectoral collaborations (i.e. so-called large-scale research infrastructure projects) on regional innovation and growth.
Finally, I have been engaged with research on the Chinese political economy and its system of spatial governance. My PhD project examined how the Chinese Communist Party, as a capitalist state, has shaped the locational geographies of Chinese capitalism through various state spatial strategies. Using a comparative-historical approach, I analyzed how a spatial division of labor between coastal and inland regions has been continuously reproduced through an array of spatial tools and interventions, including infrastructure development plans, regional development strategies, urban policies, and zoning regulations. I have continued to write on this topic, exploring more recently on how logistics and infrastructure shapes China's global strategy.
