Organisation profile

The research group Digital Publics and Trust (DOT) is a cross-disciplinary forum for theoretical and methodological development in relation to the systemic and organizational characteristics and ongoing changes in contemporary digital societies.

DOT focuses specifically on the formation of digital (counter)publics and (dis)trust in digital spaces (between citizens, towards technology, public discourse, news media and decision makers). DOT takes point of departure in normative and empirical-analytical approaches to understand digital publics and digital systems. A central aim of the group is to discuss different methodological and conceptual perspectives across academic disciplines.

DOT brings together researchers from media- and communication studies, philosophy, data science, journalism, STS, and cultural studies. Members of DOT currently research phenomena like …

  • Digital echo chambers and polarization
  • Alternative news environments and use
  • Digital counterpublics and anti-systemic movements
  • Digital methods and data science
  • Digital issue-publics
  • Recognition (struggles) in the digital age
  • Mediation of relations of trust through digital technologies
  • Digitalisation and the trustworthiness of institutions
  • Breaches of trust in the digital information environment
