UDI – User Driven IT‐Innovation

Understanding users’ needs and requirements starts with understanding people in context. This understanding forms a basis for creating visions of user experiences and for driving the design of innovative IT solutions. The starting point of user‐driven IT innovation is analyses of the needs of users, customers, teams of professionals, organizational units, and businesses. The goals of our research are to achieve more successful IT projects and greater benefits of using IT. We focus on how organizations manage, design, implement, and use IT to support users' needs and business strategies. Internationally this research is related to the widely established research communities of Information Systems (IS), Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), and Participatory Design (PD).

Research Themes in UDI

In March 2018 we have updated the description of the Research Themes we pursue in the Research Group to the following five (alphabetic order):

Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Health Informatics

We carry out workplace studies to investigate collaborative and communicative practices in complex organizational settings, for example, healthcare and welfare systems. The long‐term goal is to design technologies that better support complex collaborative practices.

Design Science Research

We investigate how Design Science Research (DSR) can be used to solve design‐related problems in practice through design, construction, evaluation and reflection on artefacts and how to generate design theories and relevant design principles for later use. Our long‐term goal is to establish DSR as a viable and acknowledged research method for IT related problems and Information Systems research.

Diffusion and Adoption of IT

We investigate how IT is being disseminated throughout our society at large and at organizational and individual levels. Specifically, how Privacy and Information Systems Security is managed at all these levels. Our long‐term goal is to theorize and model how novel technologies are diffused and adopted in new ways by organizations and individuals.

Participatory Design and Evaluation

We investigate how to specify and evaluate effects of IT usage and how effects can play a prominent role in IT management and governance. The long‐term goal is to conceptualize and develop genuine Participatory Design methods that ensure sustained effects of IT designs, infrastructures and usability.

Software Process Improvement and Project Management

We investigate how organizations can improve their software development processes and the management of IT projects. Our long‐term goal is to renew classic project management and software process improvement (SPI) approaches to include complex, lean and agile development too, as well as the role of user‐driven SPI.
