Bion's concept of experience - although this is never made explicit - covers both more or less conscious representations of e.g. a group and the verbal reconstructions of these representations. Bion sees experience as vacciliations between tests of reality and unconscious basic assumptions. It is maintained that as a principle groups experience conflicts between the individual's and the group's picture of themselves, but this conflict is evaded temporarily by the whole group subconsciously submitting to one way of seeing and behaving. This is understood as a psychic defence against inner and outer pressure.
