Standardization technologies and the transformation of work

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventOrganisation and participation in conference

    Description

Standardization technologies (such as ICT-systems, certification systems etc.) play a fundamental role in the transformation of work and society, and are important dynamics that facilitates globalized economies. Standardization has traditionally been discussed as a powerful disciplinary tool that degrades work and challenge professions (e.g. Braverman 1974). However, it could be argued that it may be more fruitful to look upon how professionals work with the standards, and in this process may transform work, the standards and the professional identity (Timmermanns & Berg 2003). Standardization technologies can be seen as leading to erosion of profession, but consequences might be more complex, and the workshop therefore invites perspectives that explore these complexities and how they interact with a Nordic tradition of self management and worker involvement.
