This year marks 25 years of UNSC Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. At the same time, we are seeing major shifts in how peace and conflict are made and maintained. Masculinist, belligerent, and exclusionary dispositions seem to be in the ascendant. This has important implications for peace and conflict research, ranging from the methodologies that we use to the concepts that we employ. Arguably, the purpose of institutions and agendas like WPS in a world where anti-gender politics are being mainstreamed may need to be rethought. This conference – in a series that examines research methodology – seeks to take stock of what happens as alliances grow around security-making that deal in violence and war, including feminists, and the alternatives available. It explores the appropriateness of our current methodologies, and the prospects for innovative methodologies, in the study of gender, peace and conflict. What feminist approaches think critically about the state and the military? How do such approaches de-centre an essentialist view of ‘women’? More broadly, the conference hopes to confront the challenges to inclusivity, solidarity, justice, etc. for peace and conflict studies in the current conjuncture. How do we research conflict and peace in contexts where gender equality, social justice, the principles of humanitarian law and EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) values will set the terms of debate? Presentations address a range of topics including: - Gender inclusive methodologies - Intersectionality and research - Talking to the policy and practitioner worlds - Accessing masculinities This 2 day conference brings together scholars (postgraduate, early career and established) working across disciplines to engage with these questions from a gendered lens to illuminate the challenges and responses in peace and conflict studies in the current environment of rising geopolitical tensions and retrenchment.
