Pandemics are like ”black swan” events, emerging all of a sudden and with a deadly global potential in the time scale of months.When COVID-19 happened, Europe was ill prepared for a severe pandemic. We lacked protective gear, testing equipment and academic modeling capability needed for a robust, effective response.
Yet, Denmark came out of the COVID-19 nightmare as a nation that did great, perhaps due to our special mix of democracy, a general trust in health authorities, a highly educated population and a strong economy that allowed draconic measures to halt the virus until highly effective vaccines defanged the pandemic.
In this session, Lone Simonsen (or "corona Lone" as she has been popularly called in Danish media), the Danish expert on pandemics, will discuss the difficulty in predicting a dynamic spread, the phenomenon of superspreading, the benefits of interdisciplinary research, what keep us up at night and what one can learn about pandemic spread from this very festival.
Lone Simonsen received the research communication award from the Ministry of Higher Education and Science in 2021 for her ability to communicate new knowledge about the corona pandemic to the Danish population at a critical time.
