Activity: Membership › Membership in research network
The LA-network aims to explore the changing Latin American scenario in terms of alterations in the perception of citizenship, new arrangements of authority, and the organization and use of public space. The network was initiated in 2006 in Denmark by a group of social scientists all of whom have been engaged in Latin American research for decades. In 2007 the network was granted support from the Danish Research Council for Society and Business to facilitate the organization of international conferences, workshops, and the development of international research cooperation.
Contemporary Latin America appears to be going through a series of radical changes as progressively inclined governments have come into office across much of Latin America. This has created a socio-political and economic environment very different from the one of authoritarian regimes of previous decades. The question is to what extent and in which forms democracy is becoming embedded in Latin America. Certainly political and cultural perceptions and practices of citizenship remain highly differentiated in terms of the structures and relations of power and emerging forms of authority.
