Between Ethnography and Works of Art: Pictures of Three Museums in Paris

Activity: Talk or presentationLecture and oral contribution

Description

Former President Chirac pointed to the new Musée du Quai Branly in Paris as a manifestation of respect for Non-western nations and the art and culture. The lecture argues that the way in which the Museum exhibits the Non-western cultural products is still colonialistic. The lecture also discusses the exhibition of Non-western sculpture etc. as art in the Louvre, and the plans of the (former) Musée des arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie to show these objects as both works of art and ethnographic objects, and to discuss colonialism as a background for the collections.
