    In an era of increased globalization and with the spread of the ideas of knowledge society, education has become increasingly essential to identity construction – among students, teachers and parents. The study explores ways in which the participation in education affect young people’s position in their local environment, their perception of the global world and ways in which they construct identity. What are the relations between high expectations to education, employment and young people’s living conditions. Comparative field studies have been conducted in schools and classrooms in a Western (Denmark), Asian (South Korea, Vietnam, Nepal) and African (Zambia) context
