The energy-society nexus entails both production, distribution and use of electricity, as well as the linkages and embedding of energy into societal development, workplaces, welfare services and landscapes.

This immersive field course explored Orkney’s pioneering renewable energy transition through interdisciplinary lenses—from energy justice and governance to community-led innovation.

Participants engaged with:

•Local Energy Histories: The origins of Scotland’s renewable transition and its socio-technical evolution.

•Community Empowerment: How grassroots energy projects foster resilience and equitable development.

•Policy & Practice: Multi-scale governance challenges in balancing efficiency, justice, and sustainability.

•Cultural Dimensions: "Energy archaeology" walks and photography exhibitions revealing landscapes transformed by decarbonization.

The course combined expert insights, site visits, and participatory discussions to critically examine the intersections of technology, policy, and community agency in just energy futures.
