I shall review the pre-Atiyah-Singer index theory (F. Noether, Hellwig, Vekua, Shapira, Lopatinsky, Gohberg, M. Krein et al.), the turn towards pseudo-differential projections (Calderón, Seeley), the appearance of spectral invariants (spectral flow, eta-invariant, determinant), and some of Matthias Lesch’s contributions.
