Women Entrepreneurs in Nepal: case study of Women Skills Development Organization (WSDO)

Women in developing countries are facing diverse challenges in order to become an entrepreneur. Gender Inequality are prevalent both in working environment and the society. The empowerment is a complex issue that often discussed in different perspective. Organizations and development programs across the world are trying to address this and solve these challenges. This research aims at investigating women empowerment within Women’s Skills Development Organization (WSDO).Women’s Skill Development organization (WSDO) is a non-governmental fair-trade organization based in Pokhara, Nepal. WSDO’s main vision is to improve the quality of life for all women in Nepal and mission is to create and support skill development opportunities in the handicraft sector. This efforts by the organization seeks to promote women’s economic empowerment women and with productive employment.
Social constructivism is applied as the philosophical approach to this research by allowing the participant to share their knowledge. The theory of feminist, capability approach and entrepreneurship are analyzed as a theoretical perspective. The qualitative research method is used for this research study. The data was collected by conducting in-depth interviews, WSDO’s women employees and founder of the organization Mrs. Ramkali Khadka were interviewed. All the data from the interview were interpreted, and were coded in different categories. The main findings were analyzed in the discussion.
Finally, the results from the study revealed that WSDO are empowering its women employee through various activities such as: health and environmental education, skills and training relating to organization’s product production. It also found out that organization employees women artisans that face difficult and significant social and economic hardships, being differently abled, abused, widowed, divorced, single and of marginalized castes.
