This project is based upon an interest in adult Danish women’s body images, and why many of them
are negative. To investigate the background of this, female socializations role in women’s body
images is investigated, both how the negative body images have affected women’s lives, and their
view upon themselves, and the effect on their choices in life. This was done by looking at different
studies of society’s conception of the ideal body, based on different historical aesthetics and
contemporary understandings of women and femininity. Furthermore, the contemporary body
activism, as a new form of socialization, is investigated as a possible way of changing negative
The project is based on critical theory, with the dualistic understanding that the individual is
developed in interaction with society. In order to examine how adult Danish woman experience this
in their everyday life, four women participated in memory-work inspired by the theory and work of
Frigga Haug. The project started with interviewing a body activist to get insight in her approach and
thoughts about Danish women’s body images. The data from the interview was used as inspirational
background to the questions the women in the memory-work were asked. The women wrote down
personal memories from everyday life concerning their body images throughout life. Afterwards they
discussed the stories and jointly raised them up to general collective memories. Critical theory’s
interest in informing and emancipating women, gave the memory-work the possibility of offering
change and development of more positive body images. The analysis of the memory-work resulted
in discussions of certain themes, that the women found important, and discussions about how joint
memory-work and body activism can provide a possibility of changing women’s negative body
