We are standing upon a global challenge, which is the climate change. Climate change arises from various reasons, but in Denmark one of the biggest contributors is emissions from the energy production. At the same time, the existing power system is experiencing a technology lock-in. The majority of the system’s mechanisms are build to produce energy based upon fossil fuels in a linear value chain. This makes it difficult to adjust the system to a more sustainable production of energy, e.g. through the introduction of new intelligent technological solutions. Furthermore, the power consumers are experiencing an intangible relationship to the power system as a whole, and the consumers rarely think about the power they use. This project report aims to make the power consumer more aware of their energy usage, and prepare them for the future energy system, that will highly depend on a more active and engaged consumer. Thus also focusing on how the transition can be made easier, from a fossil energy system to an intellectual power system, such as Macro and Micro Smart Grids’. A concept that aims to adjust the existing power system to the fluctuating energy sources, like wind energy and solar-powered energy.
Therefore, this report aims to present a solution-oriented design proposal, in the shape of a device that is aimed to make the single electricity consumer more aware of their power usage, and the system behind. In Actor-network theory terminology the device tries to open the ’’black box’’ behind the existing power system, and to make it more palpable – and simple – which would help the consumer consider when to use the electricity at the most appropriate time, based on whether the energy source is green or black, that is, based on renewable or non renewable energy sources. The device does this by visualizing the amount of “good” renewable energy, or “bad” fossil energy produced at the given time. This is done by a simple LED colour light scale, that goes from red to green - the greener thus more “good” renewable energy is produced. The device aims to influence the energy consumer to use energy resources more effectively and at the appropriate time. Thereby ensuring that the consumer takes a more active stand in terms of taking care of the environment.
