Abstrakt

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that is currently undergoing a tremendous
development. Over the last few years, tech companies and shareholders have invested
greatly in developing the technology and, consequently, a new generation of soft- and
hardware products will soon hit the markets. From the perspective of human geography
and urban planning, the present thesis will focus on how this technology might
shape and affect the future development of cities and places. With a particular interest
in ‘social augmented reality’ (sAR), denoting a type of social media platform that utilises
urban physical geographies, an investigation of how such platforms are involved
in the processes of (re)construction and negotiation of place will be conducted. The
thesis will establish a theoretical framework, in which to empirically analyse how relations
of power between agents that continually reproduce place might be affected by
the development and implementation of sAR platforms. Subsequently, the thesis will
posit different courses of action for urban planners, as suggestions that might prove
useful in handling the potentially challenging effects of implementing such platforms
in urban environments.
