This project examines the relationship between conditional effects and job training for the unemployed by internships in companies. Inspired by the theoretical framework of impact evaluation we identify mechanisms that activate the causal chain through interviews and focus groups with selected stakeholders in the case “Jobcenter Hvidovre”. Drawing also on the findings of another research paper, the project con-cludes that a successful internship is conditionally dependent on the right match be-tween company and the intern as well as the prospect of employment and progression opportunities for the unemployed. Both the unemployed and caseworkers emphasize the importance of individual considerations in the casework process. A few of the caseworkers and the Heads of the internal Departments in the employment agency recognize that the municipality may have state funded economic benefits from using internships. Almost all our respondents agree that companies can exploit the free in-ternship, but it would be difficult to attract these jobs if the economic commitment was larger, especially in a time of a financial crisis.
