World Music is a concept introduced to the public as a mean to market everything non-western. It is therefore not, as the name might imply, simply an including concept of music from the world, but a western invented form of categorization with colonial values engraved within it. As a western constructed concept with western constructed requirements of authenticity, World Music can never be anything but World Music, as the categorization as such blocks it from evolving the way mainstream or western music could.
The purpose of this project is to analyze the cultural exchanges that appears between the audience and artist in a concert setting described as World Music at ALICE CPH. The project analyze and challenge the aesthetic preference and idealization of World Music when performed in a western dominated setting. By interviewing artists whom is somehow categorized as World Musicians, and the attending audience, the concepts of hybridisation, exoticization and authenticity will be part of an analysis of the discourse in World Music.
