The purpose of this project is to create an understanding of friendship, based upon works from the philosophical tradition, acknowledged expert theorists and also expanding empirical knowledge through interviews. Through analyzing the concepts of friendship, in the works of philosophers such as Aristoteles and Francesco Alberoni, this project seeks to locate and compare the ideas found in the texts, with those of theorists such as Anthony Giddens, Zygmunt Bauman and Erving Goffman, and the input gathered from conducted interviews. By also looking at the historical surroundings of the sources, seeking hermeneutic understanding and defining themes revolving around friendship, insight is sought. Thereafter, based on the insight gathered, the themes and ideas are discussed and compared in search of commonalities or discrepancies. It is concluded, that while the digital age and the spread of the internet, have heightened the possibilities for broad global communication, the development also seems to have created a social environment, where shallow tendencies flourish. Lastly, the project finds that the social media Facebook, is used for relations based on utility, more than those based on goodness, and it is concluded that this social environment has the potential to obstruct the development of deeper social relations, as communications have moved from the physical world, to online.
